Welcome to the first issue of Majalla, our  in-house magazine designed especially for the team members of Huvafen Fushi.

We want it to be entertaining and  informative, but above all engaging. Inside you’ll find a   mixture of news, features and regular columns on a wide range of Huvafen Fushi related   topics.

I hope you enjoy this special first issue which is a combination of January, February and March. Moving forward, the next issue will be published once every after two months.

TRAININGS

NEW HIRE ORIENTATION (20th – 21st February  2018)

The New Hire Orientation Programme is designed to provide information about    Huvafen Fushi that will help our new team members transition smoothly into their roles.

Twelve new team members recently completed their 2 days New Hire Orientation  Programme.

During the orientation, the new team members also had a chance to tour our beautiful island and see it’s stunning facilities.

The Food Handler Training is a 7-hour course conducted by NSURE® Private Limited which is designed for team members who are responsible for the receiving, preparing and serving of food.

After the training, the participants have to pass the Food Handler Exam. Five team members received merit scores.

“Working near food is a delicate matter that requires  a certain aptitude.”

All participants who passed the exam will receive a Food Handler’s Certificate with the validity of  2 years.


Picture3This course is for our Engineering and Housekeeping team members who are  involved in the treatment of water, maintenance of water systems and cleaning of  showerheads, Jacuzzis and  general security of the  premises.

The Legionella Awareness Training highlights the importance of regular maintenance and monitoring of systems where Legionella bacteria can be found.

This bacteria when breathed in can cause Legionnaire’s disease, a fatal form of  pneumonia.

 



Fire Awareness Training – January 2018

Thirty eight team members attended the Fire Awareness Training conducted by Ember Fire & Safety last January 2018.

The training is designed to raise awareness of fire hazards in the workplace and how to act safely in the event of an emergency fire situation, including selecting and using a fire extinguisher.


BORDEAUX & SAKE TRAINING  (12th – 13th March 2018)

Food & Beverage Team attended a 2 days Bordeaux and Sake Training led by Entwine Consultancy – an accredited company by the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux.

The team learned about the description of Bordeaux appellation and their characteristics and had a preview about Sake, a Japanese rice wine.

This also marks the day that our 2 Dream Makers officially receive their Sake Sommelier Certificate. Raufath Saeed and Abdulla Saeed are the two of the world’s first and only Maldivian Sake Sommelier.

An intense 2-week training programme with Beata Aleksandrowicz, the acclaimed creator of Pure Massage Training Method. A groundbreaking   injury-free massage with a combination of ancient and   modern techniques.Picture6

Each of our professional spa  therapists received a certification after passing the physical exam; proving that they are confident and ready to give treatments to our guests.

BOAT SAFETY: GUEST BRIEFING ON BOARD  (14th March 2018) 

Our Transport Team plays a crucial role to make sure that all Huvafen Fushi guests  and team members alike, feel comfortable and safe while travelling on board and to give them assurance that they are available to provide service at all times.

Nazeeh Mohamed , Thakuru

Nazeeh joined the Front Office Team of Huvafen Fushi as a Boat Crew. Since then he has moved up the ladder as an Assistant Thakuru and he is currently in training to become a Thakuru. He boldly and confidently displayed his superior attributes, skills and immense hard work when he undertook our VIP clients whilst overlooking the rebranding photo shoot session.

Nazeeh’s positive and go-get attitude was recently displayed when he offered to help out his colleague with assisting guests on a sandbank trip to ensure utmost guest satisfaction. Not only did they recognize his efforts but he left a lasting impression.

What would people never guess you do in your role?

Always available on the floor. I always explain things to guests in a way that particular activities is interesting one rather than explain about the event or activity. Works towards guests needs and wants. 

What advice would you give to recent new hires?

Work hard and make your career successful 

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

Reading, watching movies, listening music 

What do you find the most challenging in your field of work?

I don’t think there is any challenging at my work 

If you could switch your job with anyone else within this company, whose job would you want and why?

As of now this is the most suitable job for me 

Anything else you’d like to add?

Team building activities are very important and “one team one goal” should be introduced.

Shivaji has been part of Huvafen Fushi team for 7 years now. In his position as a Handyman in the  Engineering Department, he has demonstrated great craftsmanship in repainting most of the areas for the festive season.  Shivaji  is also the only person who did all kinds of spray paint works. He managed to repaint all buggies as extra works whilst doing his room PPM works. This shows how Shivaji goes above and beyond his duties to show his dedication at all times.

Can be happy when seen results like buggy painting etc..

What would people never guess you do in your role?

Quality product and output in guest’s area, furniture painting, and equipment’s painting and involving for any kind of engineering works. 

What advice would you give to recent new hires?

Be honest for works and respect to all

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

Watching sports in TV

What do you find the most challenging in your field of work?

No proper space/work shop to work

15 years working here happily, and never had any complaint from any one.


SUPERVISOR OF THE QUARTER (04TH QUARTER 2017)

Abdulla Saeed more commonly known as Bilhy by everyone in the resort is our    Supervisor of the Quarter. Bilhy has shown his skills by leading his team very well. Bilhy also shows a great example to others by participating in the big events which took place at the resort. One example of which was when he did all the decorations for the New Year’s Night  Celebration by spending all his off-duty time.

SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW

What does true leadership mean to you?

A true leader is someone who will take care of their team in many aspects. A leader will guide, teach, praise, discipline, assist, and stand back when needed. A leader must always be there not only for the bad times, but the good as well.

Describe how your normal working day looks like.

I usually sleep very late, approximately 4 to 5:30 morning and wake up around 7:30 am. Most of the mornings, I work in Celsius breakfast shift. Before the operation first thing I do is drink a coffee. After that I check the mail and daily operation, after the breakfast operation some days attending F&B briefing 11:15. After briefing doing office works. Then take a break and sleep, most of the days skip the lunch.  Next shift starts at 17:30 or 19:00. Then we do outlet briefing.  After that check the restaurant is fully set and ready for operation.

 After the operation sit down with the college’s. Then go to staff area or dream cafe, playing Galendo with some colleges. And the very last playing PlayStation with Idhuhaam in between 1am to 4am.

What drew you to Huvafen Fushi originally? And how has Huvafen Fushi changed since?

Huvafenfushi was revolution to tourism resort industry. 2005 to 2012 which were golden years. At that time we did not had may luxury resorts. But after opening new resorts and new brands which makes challenge to us. But still Huvafenfushi is one of the top resort in the Maldives.  The biggest change is the team and occupancy. I worked for several years with the same team, At that time the biggest challenge was development. Means no position at all, outlet leaders were supervisors.  But now we have lot of opportunities and development within the department and management is very supportive.

What has been your favorite project/assignment at Huvafen Fushi?

There are so many things we did with the team, the unforgettable project is 2018 festive painting with Husham and also with the help of team. And also winning moment of department futsal tournament 2016.

How do you balance your career at Huvafen Fushi and family?

The biggest challenge to balance private and professional life at Huvafenfushi is the geographical situation of the hotel in the Maldives. However, I am glad that the hotel provide us with staff ferry on a daily basis, which allows us to see our family as often as possible, even if it is not an easy thing while working in F&B department.

What are three career lessons you’ve learned thus far?

You can’t succeed without failing. You’re never done learning. Have fun trying new things (and have fun being uncomfortable!!)

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

drawing and painting, playing PlayStation, futsal, garlando table football  and listening music.

What is most rewarding about your job; what makes it all worthwhile?

Winning the supervisor of the quarter 2018. Very proud to be a Maldivian first sake sommelier in the world.  Graduated with the WSET level 2

If given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?

Nelson Mandela, to fight for equality in the world

Anything else you’d like to add?

I believe this is a very good resort to build your career, I would like to thank Huvafenfushi management team for believing me and giving me the opportunity to work and develop my skills.

Solih has a creative personality and poses a positive attitude in life.  Often times, he is seen helping his team set up special dinners for the guests even if it is outside his job. He is also responsible to take care the Q-Mobile while the captain and supervisors are out at the same time. Solih is one of the key people who upsell more beverages during destination dinners.

 What is the best thing about your role?

Destination dinner setup and service that I have delivered in daily basis to our customers.

 What is your proudest moment at Huvafen Fushi?

The proudest moment at Huvafen Fushi was the day I received 10 years of service award.

What is your motto or personal mantra?

Work hard, Play hard

 What would people never guess you do in your role?

I’ve learned to not take the things that my colleagues say about their view personally, which really helps when it comes to diffusing the situation as in a way I always gives my advices to my fellow colleagues hence I am a one of the senior team member in this team.

 What advice would you give to recent new hires?

Positive and hard work is the key to success

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

Football, Watching Movies specially Hindi movies

What do you find the most challenging in your field of work?

Sometimes we don’t have enough tools or equipment

If you could switch your job with anyone else within this company, whose job would you want and why?

As a Thakuru. The reason I want be a Thakuru is because of Quest interaction.

Staff entertaining. More Facilities for staff.

Kudey has been working hard to maintain our beach and prevent further sand erosion from happening in several areas of the island.  Kudey does this by pumping huge amount of sand to place in areas where signs of erosion are showing.  Sometimes he has to work throughout the night and day without any complaints to ensure that the task is completed. He is very cooperative and a very hard worker.

Moving my work place to one place to another.

Dream Team of Huvafen Fushi had their first friendly futsal match with the country’s All Star Team which included 5 national players of Maldives.

The Dream team won the game with a score of 10-8 goals. What a great way to start the year!

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH – FEB 2018

The first Town Hall Meeting of 2018 happened last 12th February 2018. Awards and Certificates were given to the nominees and winners of the Employee of the Month for the month of January.   Thank you for all your hard work and contribution during the month of January 2018.  Keep up the good work!

This year’s first team party was hosted by FLOAT .

They organized an evening of BBQ where they did the cooking for the team. They also had great chill out music!

Yoga class is scheduled every Friday morning, at 7:00 hrs at the Yoga Pavilion.  This is open to all team members. Make sure to contact spa to inform your interest in joining this activity.

 


INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social economic cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity .

Huvafen Fushi invited all it’s female employees for a day of fun filled activities. Starting with a morning yoga, then an afternoon futsal match, and ending the night with an exclusive ladies only BBQ Party.

WHITE PARTY 15th March 2018

It was a wonderful evening for all everyone. Team members laughed and danced the night away! With guest performers, live DJ and a mocktail bar, the Front Office Department hosted a White Party at the Stingray Beach.

FRIENDLY FUTSAL MATCH – March 2018

The first Friendly Futsal Match of this month was held last 20th of March against the team of Coco Palm Boduhithi. The match resulted to a draw with a full time score of; Dream Team 4 – Coco Palm 4.

The second match was an invitation from  Bandos Maldives last March 28, with a Full time score of : HF Dream Team 2 – Bandos 2.

The world’s first and only underwater spa

Set 100 meters out to sea,  the Huvafen Spa has overwater pavilions and two treatment rooms eight meters below the surface.

The underwater treatment rooms took 12 months to construct and are made of a solid-cast resin to create an underwater structure that could be set in the open ocean with minimal disturbance to the ecosystem of the Maldives. The resin is five inches thick, which provides infinitely better clarity than the cheaper option of laminated glass.

VINUM WINE CELLAR

The Maldives’ first underground wine cellar.

6,000 bottles of wine sit 8 meters underground in one of the finest Wine Cellar in Asia.  This bottle collection is not just the largest in the Maldives but in the entire Indian Ocean.

Vinum is a Latin word which mean “wine”.

LONU VEYO

The Maldives’ first floating salt water pool. 

The only outdoor saltwater flotation pool of its kind in the Maldives, known for it’s therapeutic and healing effects.
