Dearest Islanders,

Kung Hei Fat Choy!

I trust that we all welcomed the New Year in good spirits with all our islanders, friends and families.

January 2019 for sure has been a great start for us on many grounds: First, we are all extremely happy that we have made our budget for the first month of the year! Our service charge equally has attained the sum of $1000, which is inspirational and rewarding for all the hard work that has been achieved in the past month.

Thanks to your total commitment and dedication, especially during this busiest time of the year, followed by amazing reviews and feedback from our notable guests, our reputation is growing hence attracting more interests and business on our books.

In February, we are going to be equally busy with many of our guests from the Asian Continent visiting for their family holidays and the spring festival. An array of activities and events is scheduled to mark the Lunar New Year on the 5th February. In the coming months, we will continue with our subtle enhancements of our offers, product and services.  Our pool and beach service will be upgraded with a beach bar offering efficient and remarkable touches to our discerning guests. The EBC will be revamped with new dining furniture, the coffee shop will be upgraded with Coffee section, Juices, Smoothies and Shakes. The Wellness Café, a new addition to the Javvu Spa, will add a richer experience to the Spa Journey. The latest in the series of innovation, will be the Sky House with the bubble, whose construction is about to start in February.

As stated in all our brand communications and briefings, we pledge to become one of the most competitive and leading resort in the market. We are committed to continuous improvement of our products, delivering rich experiences to our guests and highly determined to the safety, security and wellbeing of all our guests. Your continuous hardwork is phenomenal.  Big Thank You to all of you!

Wishing you a year fully loaded with great rewards, achievements, prosperity and happiness.

The first Huddle of the year 2019 happened on January 10th at EBC for our managers and supervisors from all of the departments for some warm up, activities and brain storming. Indeed, this sunny morning saw the team on the beach being led by Kelzang our Yoga instructor through a series of yoga stretches. Following this we had the participants playing the musical “Pass the Parcel” of negative guest comments in order to find the ownership of each action. Then, a “Tug of War” activity to show the physical and mental power inside each of them! We finished off the morning activities with rephrasing some negative quotes into their positive version.

After breakfast, our leadership teams were then split into their respective 4 Amilla Fushi Brand Traits of Natural Allure, Idyllic Escape, Rich Experiences and Intuitive Generosity, each one brainstorming about the 3 buzz words – Ownership, Positive and Powerful.

Following this session, we did another Huddle on 24th January to keep implementing those 3 buzz words. After some breathing exercises from Dela, one single activity to combine them all : a scavengers hunt race! Every one per team was the owner to lead their team to a specific place without using certain clues but using positive words! Having a powerful mindset to always keep going and competing! Well done Rich Experiences and Idyllic Escape for your efforts!

Amilla Fushi Triathlon

On 3rd December to get our anniversary celebrations started, we arranged a Brand Traits Houses Triathlon. All 4 houses were represented by 10 participants who took part in the games. We had 4 swimmers from each house doing relay laps in the main marina, this was followed by 2 participants from each house cycling around the island, finishing off with 4 runners from each house completing 500 meters each in relay fashion to try to get to the finish line first. Intuitive Generosity (Green Team) got off to a strong start in the swimming taking the lead. Once the cycling started both Rich Experiences (Yellow Team) and Natural Allure (Blue Team) started to come back into the race. It was only finally decided in the last section of the race with the runners from Intuitive Generosity sprinting to the finish first to claim the victory. What a great afternoon for all of our island athletes.

Lucky Draw – 4th and 5th December

In the run up to our 4th year anniversary the resort arranged for a Lucky Draw to take place from our islander restaurant IceGe during lunch time on both the 4th and 5th of December.

With 290 islanders eligible to try and win a prize we did the draw over the 2 days with 145 prizes being awarded each day meaning that each and every one won a prize. All of the names were then added again for the top 11 prizes on the night of the anniversary party. Prizes ranged from TVs to rice cookers to cash vouchers and many more.

High Tea for Roohu of the Year Nominees

Every month we recognised our Rock Star (Front of House operations) and Super Hero (Back of House operations) for their contribution to their department and the resort. In December in preparation for the anniversary party, we hosted a High Tea where all of these winners from October 2017 to November 2018 were invited to meet the Amilla Fushi senior leadership team to tell us why we should give them their vote for Rock Star and Super Hero of the Year.

The High Tea was hosted in EBC with attendance from all of the hopeful candidates giving them the opportunity to tell us about themselves as well as mingle with the management team before the voting commenced. Best of luck to all of the candidates and the lucky winners will be announced on the anniversary party night.

Brand Trait Fun Challenge

On 4th December, continuing our anniversary build up, we were delighted to have the final Fun Challenge of the year being hosted by Idyllic Escape. All the teams were playing hard for the points as these could help decide the House that would win the Brand Traits House Cup at the upcoming anniversary party.

The team celebrated in style on 6th December to recognize our 4th anniversary with a trendy Disco Party. Islanders were encouraged to dress up in fashion from the disco era to try to claim the prize of best dressed for male and female categories. Manta Festival, Baa Atoll – 24th November 2018

Baa Atoll was chosen as the first UNESCO Biosphere reserve due to its globally significant biodiversity. It’s the home to 250 species of coral, teaming with over 1,000 species of fish, including iconic mega-fauna and it’s also one of the best places in the world to see manta rays. These cartilaginous elasmobranch fish are filter feeders of the smallest animals in the ocean, plankton. They spend most of their time, looking for the plankton as they must consume 12% of their body weight in plankton per week.

From June to November, Mantas love to spend their time in Hanifaru, one of the only places in the world where the enigmatic reef manta rays (Manta alfredi) aggregate by the hundreds to gorge on plankton rich waters during high tide.

With 4,400 individuals recorded, the Maldives has one of the largest populations of Mantas in the world. It’s important to preserve, celebrate these ‘gentle giants’ of the ocean and to awareness the new generations about the beautiful sealife and threats.

On the initiative of Manta Trust, an organization which works for the conservation of Manta Ray, Baa Atoll has been chosen to be the place of the 1st Manta Festival. This event took place on November 24th 2018 at Dharavandhoo and brought together over 12 resorts, 11 local schools and different actors of the protection of environment such as Atoll Marine Centre, Olive Ridley Project, Marine Saver, Parley for the Ocean, Environmental Protection Agency and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The aim of this festival was to get schools involved and gathered for a day to sensitize and educate them about mantas and more generally about the environment and marine issues. Guest of honor, former president Mr. Mohamed Nasheed gave an important speech on the importance of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Baa Atoll and sustainable development in the Maldives and enjoyed visiting the stalls.

As part of the festival organization, each Resort was in charge of a school for their participation to the festival. Amilla took in charge of Kendhoo and donated 16 snorkeling sets to the school for the students in order to organize snorkeling excursions to observe the beautiful underwater world.

During the festival, each stakeholder was represented at one of the Twenty-two marine-themed stalls where marine biologists and environmental activists invited the children to their stand to actively participate in games and discussions on mantas and more generally about the ocean and its preservation. Different competitions for kids as photography, arts and sculptures challenges animated this festival which attracted a lot of people. We want to congratulate Kendhoo School who won the sculpture competition with an impressive 16 x 13ft sculpture of the spottiest manta in the Maldives “Mr Spotty”.

Throughout this successful day, snorkeling excursions was organized and led by official guides who shared their knowledge with everyone.

This festival was successful with over 200 students and 1000 visitors. It allowed to create strong relation between stakeholder and local schools. On behalf of Amilla Fushi we would like to thank all the participants of the festival for their involvement and their dynamism, we look forward to participate to the next Baa Atoll manta festival.

Healthy Tips – Top 5 Benefits of Drinking Water

Drinking water and staying hydrated is great for maintaining hydration and helps improve the function of your heart, brain and muscles!

Our bodies are composed of about 60% water and we constantly lose fluid in warmer climates and during strenuous activities.

Here below are 5 top benefits of drinking water:

1. Increases Energy & Relieves Fatigue

Since your brain is mostly water, drinking it helps you think, focus and concentrate better and be more alert. As an added bonus, your energy levels are also boosted!

2. Promotes Weight Loss

Removes by-products of fat, reduces eating intake (by filling up your tummy if consumed prior to meals), reduces hunger (hello natural appetite suppressant!), raises your metabolism and has zero calories!

3. Flushes Out Toxins

Gets rid of waste through sweat and urination which reduces the risk of kidney stones and UTI’s (urinary tract infections).

4. Improves Skin Complexion

Moisturizes your skin, keeps it fresh, soft, glowing and smooth. Gets rid of wrinkles. It’s the best anti-aging treatment around!

5. Maintains Regularity

Aids in digestion as water is essential to digest your food and prevents constipation.

Make sure to always stay hydrated and healthy!

Although, we were struggling to achieve our financial goals, the morale and determination of our leaders supported by their team of islanders, were kept on a high note whilst proper measures were taken to keep the ball rolling. Thank you to all the islanders who were strongly engaging in promoting the activities and the TSMIC fanatic programme.

We have also witnessed a growth in the participation of our islanders in our BRAND TRAITS Fun Challenge! Remember, it is always healthy to take a pause out of your busy schedule and join the fun gathering, hence allowing us to strengthen our Roohu in the community.

The Huddle, expertly driven by our Talent Development Manager Ailish, has taken some new dimensions. One morning, we were engaged in a warrior training from Visiting Coach Lindley, where our fitness level was tested to the full and on another morning, we were taken to the Tennis Courts, where we had the privilege to be mastered like in a Tennis Academy by our lovely Napha. It was for certain a debut for a few and a test for many. Through the grapevine, I heard that the next huddle will be more amusing! Watch Out!

The counselors from Sultan’s Village together with The Oceaners also participated in the Worldwide Kids Certification Training, based in the UK. They were all certified with high remarks. Congratulations!

The Katheeb/a also attended an important training with the International Institute of Modern Butlers with the aim to polish their standards of service and be on the marks to welcome their notable guests for this festive season.

With a note of congratulations, Amilla Fushi was also internationally recognised during the South Asia Travel Awards as the Leading Wellness and Spa Resort for South Asia and Maldives.

Lastly, thank you for your great support in welcoming warmly our new Director of Human Resources – Ms. Patsy L. Kruger in our community. We wish her a great journey with us!

Have a wonderful October! A number of activities shall be scheduled for the rest of the year, as we are making our final arrangements for the Festive Season!

Olive Ridley Presentation by Dr. Claire

Olive 3From the 10th to 12th September 2018, we had the privilege of having Dr. Claire Petros who is a turtle veterinarian, talk on behalf of the Olive Ridley Project (ORP) to our staff and guests here at Amilla Fushi about the importance of sea turtle conservation.

Dr. Claire educated our islanders and guests about the conservation measures undertaken by the ORP to ensure the protection of sea turtles in the Indian Ocean. In particular, the Olive Ridley turtles, this species of sea turtle is the most vulnerable to getting entangled in ‘ghost nets’, which are lost, discarded or abandoned fishing nets left at sea. Consequently, due to the pelagic lifestyle of Olive Ridley turtles, they are the most vulnerable species at getting caught in ghost nets which can be fatal.

On Claire’s first night, a presentation was held for the guests about who the ORP are and what work they carry out, she also included some examples of the turtles which had been rehabilitated and released back into the wild. This included one of our very own turtles (Ali Jappo) which is a critically endangered hawksbill turtle. This turtle had been rescued a year ago due to having a large hook in her throat. Fortunately Claire and her team managed to remove the hook which allowed us to return the turtle back to her resident reef where our very own Turtle Safari trip is held.  The evening was a real success with all the guests engaging with Claire and gaining a new understanding about the importance of turtle conservation in the Maldives.Olive 4

Not only did Claire provide captivating talks to our guests and staff, she also joined our Turtle Safari trips with $20 per guest of the procedures donated to the ORP to aid with their turtle conservation work. Prior to going out to see the turtles, Claire presented further information to guests about how to act appropriately in the water with the turtles, she also tested the guests on their knowledge of the different species of sea turtles, and also how to use photo identification to determine individual turtles based on their facial scales which are unique like our fingerprint.
The guests thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Claire coming along on our trips and showing them first-hand how to safely take photos and act respectfully in the water with the turtles.

On behalf of Amilla Fushi, we would like to thank Dr. Claire Petros for coming to our resort to spread the word about the rewarding and crucial work undertaken by the ORP, we look forward to working very closely with the ORP in the near future.

Dearest Islanders,Resort Manager

Following a busy July with some great performances, for sure August has not been disappointing in terms of operations! The resort was kept busy with a high occupancy particularly with many families visiting, from different parts of the world taking advantage of the school holidays.

While extending farewell to these beautiful families, it is so rewarding to see that in many ways, our islanders have really gone the extra mile to place a smile on each face of these young guests.

At one time, we were caught in persisting challenging weather conditions, but our determination and commitment to be of service to our guests went above and beyond expectations! From all the teams at the airport to the resort teams, we felt like a much bonded community who left no stone unturned to ensure full attention and professional services were extended at all times! Big Thank You for all your hard work!

During August, we also hosted a few events, among which a beautiful celebration of Eid Al Adha- Maali Parade on Twilight affair, our very first Eid Fun Challenge with Brand Traits Teams, Futsal Match with guests and Jalsa hosted by Housekeeping Team.

We participated and hosted the TVEC School Grand Opening in Kihadhoo, a project by Coastline Foundation.

Our heartfelt congratulations go to our sister resort FINOLHU for celebrating their 2nd successful year! Kudos also to their football team for winning the Inter-Resort Football Tournament. Huge congratulations also to Huvafen Fushi for their 14th year of success!

Lastly, it gives me great pleasure to welcome some great leaders to the family; Nava (Assistant Financial Controller), Shiyax (Executive Housekeeper) and Chef Komang (Chef de Cuisine). We wish them best of luck!

As we continue to grow our community, in preparation for upcoming high season, my wish is for all of you to support each other, ensure easy integration for new joiners  and be more bonded, hence achieving great results altogether.

Amilla Fushi TripAdvisor “Certificate of Excellence”

Travel Click

Congratulations Amilla Family for achieving the

5 star “Certificate of Excellence” from the

World’s largest travel site- TripAdvisor!

Let’s continue to shine!

“Ocean Discovery with Laura”

1.Can you tell us more about yourself?

Hi, my name is Laura and I am currently working in Amilla Fushi as your Marine Biologist. I started my love for the ocean when I was 15 years old during my conservation expedition. Right after, I took my scuba diving course in Indonesia to further explore the ocean whilst helping the conservation team at the same time. I also have my Masters Degree, specializing in dolphins and I’m also a certified scuba diving instructor.

2.What is the most challenging experience you encountered in the ocean/underwater?

It’s always been disappointing to see the ocean being destroyed day by day, either from human activities or even simply by nature. Coral bleaching is one of the greatest issues we are facing today. Warmer water temperatures can result in coral bleaching. When water is too warm, corals will expel the algae living in their tissues causing the coral to turn completely white. In fact, Maldives had a massive bleaching in 2016.

3. Can you describe a typical work week of a marine biologist in Amilla Fushi?

I usually start my day at 8:30am, then followed by a few trips that are scheduled for the entire day: turtle trip, marine biology exploration, ocean discovery and Manta trip at Hanifaru Bay. These are great opportunities for me to help our guests to learn more about the ocean, pursue an adventure, experience the coral reef and participate in ongoing research to personally make a difference to our fragile environment. We also do photo ID of turtles, dolphins and mantas for our database.

4. Can you share with us some magical stories about your experience with Amilla guests at Hanifaru bay?

Hanifaru Bay has always been magical and exciting to visit. My most special one is when I was surrounded by hundred of mantas during my stop with Amilla guest!

5. What message do you want to share with our islanders?

I would love to educate the team about the ocean and how fragile our marine life is. Many of them are not aware of what they normally do but it is making a big change to our environment. By teaching our team that the physical environment is fragile and indispensable we can begin fixing the problems that threaten it. We can even simply reduce the plastic pollution by refusing single-use plastics that are usually being thrown into the ocean. Always remember that small habits can have a colossal effect on the environment but if we begin working together as a team, we can make a huge difference on saving the ocean!

“Interesting facts you should know about the famous Hanifaru Bay and Baa Atoll”

1.Baa atoll was chosen as the first UNESCO Biosphere reserve due to its globally significant biodiversity. The coral reefs (21,000 km2) are the seventh most extensive in the world, representing some 3% of global reef area.

2.Baa Atoll is the home to 250 species of coral, teaming with over 1,000 species of fish, including iconic mega-fauna such as whale sharks and manta rays, as well as large populations of marine turtles, seabirds, whales and dolphins.

3.Baa atoll is one of the best places in the world to see manta rays, with 4,400 individuals recorded; the Maldives has one of the largest populations in the world. These cartilaginous elasmobranch fish are filter feeders of the smallest animals in the ocean…plankton!

4.Manta rays must consume 12% of their body weight in plankton per week. Known for their graceful and peaceful nature manta rays are commonly referred to as the ‘gentle giants’ of the ocean.

5.Hanifaru is a world renowned bay that was declared a protected area in 2009 due to it Picture6being a biologically significant site for marine life including nesting sites for hawksbill and green turtles, occasional roosting sites for the black-naped tern, brown noddies and lesser noddies. More exclusively it was protected to aid endangered mega-fauna such as manta rays and whale sharks.

6.The infamous bay is one of the only places in the world where the enigmatic reef manta rays (Manta alfredi) aggregate by the hundreds to gorge on plankton rich waters during high tide. The area has a unique water circulation system that pushes plankton into the bay providing a large supply of plankton in a small area. It is a spectacle to behold when a feeding frenzy occurs with cyclone feeding of hundreds of manta rays, Hanifaru bay is one of the only places in the world to document this feeding behavior.Picture5

7.Manta rays are endangered, predominantly due to anthropogenic activity. In order to aid with their conservation, noninvasive photo Identification is carried out by taking a photo of their ventral surface (stomach).

8.Each manta ray has a unique spot pattern which can then be used to identify individuals and create a large database of reef manta rays, we can then monitor the population as a whole.

“Coffee with Resort Manager”

As part of our ongoing engagement with our Islanders, we exercise a weekly coffee session specially hosted by our Resort Manager – Jean Noël.

The activity is a great opportunity to connect with all islanders and to discuss our journey and life in the community.

The most important point that is commonly raised by participants, is always about the support that needs to be extended to each other by each islander as one bonded community.

We look forward to seeing more of you for the next coffee sessions with our Resort Manager, every Tuesday at EBC.

See you there!

August Focus Tips from Jaavu Spa – Never stop Learning!

In August, we saw two International Trainers who visited us to refresh and update the therapists on the latest evolutions of !QMS and iLA – 2 of our 7 International brands.

Rowan from !QMS was first and did an amazing 4 days of training with the team where the team got to be interactive and involved with the different products and experiments. They were encouraged to ask all the questions they wanted to about the brand.

Rowan also did an Aficionado guest workshop where some of our repeaters joined in a proactive session. At the end of the training session, they were all awarded with certificates and gift bags.  Always a highlight!

We even got the non-therapists involved to have a share of fun!

We also had Amrita, from iLA, an amazing therapist, trainer, yogi, healer from Indonesia!  She worked with the natural and  organic treatment range to teach the therapists on how to use their energy when attending  guests,  to heal their souls and improve their moods in this beautiful surroundings.

Eid Al-Adha or “Festival of Sacrifice“, one of  the most important celebrations in Islam was celebrated on 21st August 2018. Eid Celebrations started with morning prayers and our islanders were greeted outside IceGe by the management team followed by a special breakfast that was organized for this auspicious occasion. Four days of activities were organized from 21st to 24th August to highlight the celebrations.

Amilla ‘Fun Challenge’ was held on22nd August 2018 at EBC.

During this event, our guests were also invited to participate.  Islanders were divided into groups representing our four Brand Traits.

Several activities were organized – Goal Score, Plate Run, Beach Volleyball and Tug of War.

After this successful event, it has been decided to make the ‘Fun Challenge’ a monthly event to be hosted  by one Brand Trait House.

The winner for the month of August was Rich Experiences

We welcome two trainers from GFS for 4 sessions of Fire Awareness (both theoretical and practical sessions).

40 islanders attended the training to equip themselves with the techniques of dealing with fire emergencies.

Well done guys!

Twice a month, we get our leadership team up bright and early to take part in our bi-weekly Huddle which brings together the management and supervisors from all of the departments for some warm up, activities and brain storming.

The sessions allow us to have the type of active brain or physical exercise that might not be possible in the normal confines of a meeting room and with the fresh air and sunrise of the beach front, we allow ourselves to let nature help in our team creativity and activity processes.

August 6th saw the team on the beach being led by our Director of Communications Brinda Hora through a series of yoga stretches. Following this we had the participants pair up for some 3 legged beach volleyball, it may sound easy however the pairs have to work on their communication, teamwork, adaptability and strategy in order to get the points needed to win the game.

We finished off the morning with some very creative beach art with the group being divided into 4 teams to create some sand art that would clearly depict our 4 Amilla Fushi Brand Traits of Natural Allure, Idyllic Escape, Rich Experiences and Intuitive Generosity with some very creative and innovative results.

The team were them back on the beach again on August 27th where our gym personal trainer Kamal led the group through their warm up. We followed this with some very fun and interesting product knowledge Pictionary with the 2 teams going head to head to try to out-do each other artistically in order to get their team members to guess the product or service they selected at random. We kept the brain ticking over with a selection of Rebus puzzle challenges for the 2 teams with them racing against each other to find the 12 solutions.

Our leadership teams were then split into 3 groups, each one taking a section of our Start, Stop and Continue initiative to refocus our efforts for the final quarter of the year on areas for development, improvement, implementation and removal to move forward as a team with our best practices.

On 15th August 2018, Amilla Fushi Indian Islanders celebrated their 71st  Independence Day.

Jalsa – July  2018 Awards and Recognition

Rock Star Winner – Ni Gusti Ayu Made Ratih (Spa Therapist)

We had an incident where a guest was sold a display product (which contains only stones for weight/no product, Ayu picked up on the mistake and managed to save the day before guest left for home later that day. Ayu has been with Javvu Spa for just over a year and in this period of time she has maintained a consistent high quality of treatments showing her care and passion at all times. She is the most stable therapist we have in the team and always ensures to provide genuine and thoughtful experience to our guests which naturally allures them to come back for more.

Ayu’s simplicity captivates intuitively with a genuine attention to each and every guest or a colleague she encounters.

As we always look for a wow factor, however, sometimes the simplicity already defines the wow factor, specially consistency and never wavering persistence is hard to maintain in this environment we live and work in.

Ayu always kept her attitude diligently and she always brings love and laughter to the team. She’s always willing to be flexible whenever needed to make sure we provide rich experiences to our valued guests. We are proud of you Ayu!

Jalsa – July 2018 Awards and Recognition

Mosarof is also the person behind all decorative palm leaves on special private BBQ dinner. He always makes himself available to help the garden team on busy operations and assisting to unload our weekly supply.

Great job to all involved!

CONGRATULATIONS FINOLHU on your 2nd year anniversary!
